Campus Radio

It's cool to me that a group of students want to launch a radio station at LBCC. I have some concerns, but also some things I find beneficial about it. Firstly, I always like to hear collaboration between people, resulting in an idea that they find exciting, and want to share with others, as I'm sure the idea of a radio station would be. My concerns regarding this idea are cost, listeners, and whether it would be worth it in the end. It takes a lot of effort to start something like this, you have to make a room dedicated to the radio station, equipped with all the devices and equipment the crew would need, and that is not cheap. Another concern is whether people would listen to the radio or not. Would it be accessible in areas other than just the campus, or would you have to tune in only while you were at school. Not only that, but which campus would it involve, I'm assuming the main one in Albany, but maybe the other campus' would want one as well. If a list of all the pros and cons were made, I'm sure you could work out the cons to make the idea work. There's just always a lot more effort that has to go into something like this than people originally think, and if it doesn't work out in the end, it would be a bummer to let all that time put into setting it up go to waste.
Something to think about after the ball is rolling and the set up has started is the type of radio station you'd want to have. I would definitely say comedy should be added into it. Students going to school don't always want to hear about news right when that get to school before class, they're more likely to want to hear jokes that make them laugh and relax before class starts. Another program to add that would tailor the audience is specific advertisements that aren't being talked about on other stations. This would involve stuff that was strictly to do with LBCC. Talking about scholarships being offered, deadlines to have various applications submitted, and things like this that the average person doesn't bother to look in to would be really helpful. They could hear it on the radio, along with the short summary of what it is, and then decide if it's worthy enough for them to look into later.
As talked about before, this isn't going to be a cheap project. Once approved, the group of students/faculty that are wanting to make this idea happen, will need to get funds to support all the equipment they'll be needing. This can be done through bake sales on campus during passing time, since everyone loves a sweet treat during the day. Going back to old school care washes is always a fun idea, and maybe even doing something more extreme like starting a "Go Fund Me" page. This can be advertised all over school and sent to the whole student body emails, where they can access a link to a page that allows them to donate money to supporting the radio station. This can spread like wild fire, and people who are also enrolled at OSU may share it with their friends as well.
